![]() ![]() We're familiar with the swapping of companies to form combined arms Task Forces that are either tank-heavy, mech-inf heavy, or blended (equal tank and mech inf elements). All the same stuff that we'd expect in a US ad-hoc Task Forces. For example, a Motorized Rifle Battalion reinforced with a tank company, elements of supporting arms like Anti-Aircraft, Artillery, Recon, Engineers, etc. ![]() The basic idea is that BTG are task organized battalion-sized units. ![]() When Russia was building up their forces around Ukraine, aside from the generic "there are now 100,000/150,000/170,000 troops", there were some reporting on the number of Battalion Tactical Groups (BTGs) being deployed. As before, I'll not be allowing comments. From what I've been able to gather, Russia has committed a VERY large percentage of its ground forces in and around Ukraine - a staggering amount in my opinion, leaving only token organized forces in the rest of their country.īut today's focus is on the oft-mentioned but potentially misunderstood Battalion Tactical Group. To me it's important because the Russian and Ukraine Military Forces are only so big and knowing who's been committed so far can do some backwards math of the forces that were available pre-war. Today's topic is my open question and hopefully some knowledge sharing to others.Īs I stated in my prior post, as I have a deep interest in Orders of Battle, I've been trying to track who and what is currently involved in the fighting. And I am posting about my thoughts elsewhere. I'm not breaking my own unsaid rule of not posting topics about the current war in Ukraine, but as I've been so consumed with trying to follow the situation while trying to understand it from a military and wargame perspective, I have open questions. ![]()
